Mary Shelly Overdrive – Hideous Sexy

So I get an email from the band Mary Shelly Overdrive that just barely avoided a sight unseen deletion. But the email reads as follows

Hideous Sexy is yet another pointless covers album from Mary Shelley Overdrive — available for FREE download. The EP is a collection of cover songs recorded during practice sessions, rehearsals, etc. during the recording of our (as yet untitled) LP.

Included on the album are covers of songs by Blue Oyster Cult, Antiseen, Black Flag, Devo, Bo Diddley, The White Stripes and The Vaselines, as well as an interpretation of the ’60s Batman theme.

I’m game. From the looks of it, they simply sent out a mass email to Curt Purcell’s sidebar. And I routinely consider it an honor to be on that list. The album is a fast chunk of enjoyable trash-psych. The band’s website indicates they have a pretty great sensibility (they have the entire album up for free download if you are interested). But I wasn’t gonna post anything about them until I listened to their cover of Devo’s “Gates of Steel”. It’s a very good cover of my favorite Devo song, and I’ve gotta post that up. And hey, thats one hell of a band name.
