I remember watching Akira on a sunday morning, a tape my dad got a bootleg from some kid at his job. For about ten minutes until my grandparents saw the first person explode.
Saturday Morning Anime was instrumental in shaping my tastes. Demon City Shinjuku, 8-man After All, Bubblegum Crisis, Galaxy Express 999, Robot Carnival, and a bunch of video store fare was incredible. I talked about it on my defunct livejournal ages ago, I should revisit these crusty old movies on 4l at some point.
And how awesome was seeing Ghost in the Shell for the first time, too?
I watched 999 recently and it holds up – Matsumoto’s a genius, and there’s so much of his stuff I haven’t tapped – it’s all interconnected too, which just makes it harder to catch up.
Ghost – That chase through the market and into the canal is still up there as one of my favorite chases in film.
Maybe that could be your follow up to the weekly Lone Wolf writeups. I’d read the hell out of that.
this, Lone Wolf, & Akira were the manga trifecta for me as a kid. and those Art Adams covers!
I remember going to a con in Boston & getting bootlegs of Akira & Appleseed anime & passing that shit around like your little sister.

Fangs for the memories!
